Lookout at the Ball Alley, Clogherhead
PROJECT DETAILS
Location: Ball Alley, Main Street, Clogherhead, Co. Louth
Project Description: Design of Look Out Post Interpretive Centre and Civic Space
Planning Permission: Planning permission granted October 2023
Project Completion: Ongoing

The site of the old Ball Alley on the Main Street of Clogherhead has been is the ownership of the Clogherhead Development Group for a number of years, serving as a picnic area for the local community but remaining largely underutilized as a community space. Studio 6B Architects have designed a small building at the site’s elevated eastern corner to capture views of Clogherhead Bay, evoking the vantage point once commanded by the original Look Out Post No. 3 (LOP 3) along the coast. This new community space will feature a building dedicated to raising awareness, providing education, and interpreting the local area’s points of interest. Given that the structure of LOP 3 is currently inaccessible to the public, the proposed building will function as an interpretive centre, exhibiting artefacts and information related to the history of the area, with a particular focus on the LOP 3. By referencing the LOP 3, this interpretive centre will offer a safe and accessible venue for conveying the history of Ireland’s World War II Lookout Post number 3 to the public. Additionally, the building is intended to house a weather monitoring station, serving as a local leisure amenity and contributing to community research and education. This site of the old Ball Alley will be landscaped referencing the old Ball Alley and terraced to form an amphitheatre to provide a multifunction outdoor Civic Space.
